I bar-tacked it every time it started/ended or where I couldn't sew it to allow where the compression straps ran under.
It is bar-tacked at critical stress points, wind-resistant and water-repellant with a polyurethane coating.
Either choice, bail ring or not, needs to be really well sewn in (if your machine zig zags I would suggest replicating a bar tack , two or three straight stitches across the webbing and two or three zig zag stitches over those).
I go forwards and then reverse over the stitching so that it doesn't come undone, making the bar tack the width between the two lines of top-stitching.
These packs are constructed with beefy 1000 denier nylon and 1050 denier Ballistics, plus all stress points are bar-tacked for North Country durability.
