In the meantime, I'm enjoying the mists of autumn but, when I dream, it is of cityscapes rather than rural landscapes.
Included are his mouth-watering depictions of gumball machines, cakes and pies, along with his later human figures and brilliantly colored cityscapes of San Francisco and landscapes of the Sacramento Valley.
Occasionally, the students from my urban environments seminar will send cards depicting cityscapes : tenement housing, a tangle of highways, a well-designed park.
The large, stylized portraits he presented employ the same picture-book graphics and primary colors of the earlier cityscapes and car book.
Why I mention all this is because there's an exhibition opening tomorrow evening at the gallery which I earnestly recommend because it concentrates on new paintings of South African cityscapes and landscapes.
